Robert Taylor MFH
Robert Taylor is a truly unique
horseman, trainer and educator. Born in Ireland to huntsman Jack Taylor and grandson of the legendary huntsman Tommy Taylor, Robert had exposure to
horses, hounds and foxhunting from day one. By age 4,
Robert was hunting and ponyclubbing. At 10 he started show
jumping, representing Ireland as a Junior at 14 years of age, then
later as a full
International.
Robert's first job was an amateur whipper-in, but his interests in education and sports took him to Liverpool University where he studied Math and Physical Education and trained as a teacher. In 1974 he moved to Australia where he stayed for nineteen years. The picture at the right shows Robert at the age of 18 hunting in England. His father Jack is on the horse behind him.
In Australia Robert participated in the show jumping circuit as a judge, organizer and course designer. He became involved in harness racing as an owner, trainer, driver and treasurer of the Trotting Association. He served with the Pony Club Movement as International Games Coach, Northern Territory Association President and he represented the Australian Pony Club Council as Treasurer.
Robert's wit and exuberance made him a natural ringmaster for the Darwin Royal Show for many years. And as a coach he inspired thousands of pony clubbers and mounted games riders throughout Australia. Robert contributed regularly to national horse magazines writing on his favorite topics of horsemanship and mounted games.
When he moved to the USA in 1994, Robert coached national and international mounted games teams, evented nationally, participated in competitive trail riding and carriage driving, and purchased TaylorMade Stables.
He returned to his early passion of foxhunting when he was asked to become Huntsman for Goshen Hounds. As a third generation huntsman Robert brings great skill and resources to working with the hounds and in training horses for foxhunting. Robert was made MFH in 2006.
It's as an instructor that Robert's genius shines through. He understands the horse/rider psychology and uses it to guide students towards immediate success in lessons and long term goals with their horses and riding. He nurtures and inspires students at all levels to be trainers, not just riders of their horses. Robert travels nationally and internationally to run clinics and coach teams, and his annual trip to Australia to coach the USA Mounted Games Team is a highlight in his calendar. Robert gives regular lessons at TaylorMade to boarders, serious adult riders of all disciplines and eventers.
